And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. Elijah had to prepare himself for meeting God, and must have wondered what was coming. We cannot experience God and walk away the same. God was getting ready to do something wild for Elijah. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” -1 Kings 19:9-11 The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. (At this point, walk around handing students a cracker or other small item to nibble).Īnd the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”ġ0 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. He knew that Elijah could not continue without nourishment, and provided for his stamina with miraculous encouragement. 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. “Take my life I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. God had not abandoned Him…Įlijah was afraid and ran for his life. Elijah wondered why God had left him the only prophet of God. The prophet felt extremely discouraged and tired at this point and was ready to give up. Have students sit down under a table or in the corner. King Ahab became more agitated about Elijah’s head after the priest-expunging incident and was forced to flee again. Talk about his struggle with the wicked queen and king how God looked after Him at the river, and with the widow and how they defeated the false priests from Baal. Students should be reminded of Elijah’s story, especially if they are following up on an introductory lesson. We don’t see wind, but we do know that it exists because we can see its effects as trees bend and sway, or hair blowing around wildly. Let them know that we will be talking a bit about wind. Younger students can feel the air moving through their hands by holding up a hand. They will need to use only the straw to maneuver the ball between marks. Students can race one at a time, or two at a stretch depending on how many space is available. Students will need a straw and small items such as a Ping-Pong or pom-pom.
